The idea of being a researcher has grown progressively in Tim's life since high school. In college a professor convinced him to quit another job to work in a laboratory with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. After graduating from college, Tim began work as a laboratory technician in a Mayo Clinic HIV laboratory before deciding to pursue his Ph.D.
"At Mayo I am constantly getting exposed to good medical research and continually growing more interested in the field. I currently work with the T-cell cytoskeleton and how it helps to activate the T-cell to fight off threats to the body."
Tim is currently in his fourth year as a Mayo Graduate School student.
"Mayo feels like a small community where everybody knows everybody. As a student, you know all the professors; you know who can answer your questions and what everyone is working on."
Tim spends his free time working on the house he purchased in Rochester, taking in movies and socializing with friends and classmates.
"The standard of living is great in Rochester. The stipend allows you to live very comfortably and Mayo is a top-notch place to grow as a researcher. The resources are excellent and there is a lot of healthy collaboration. If you want to come here and do serious science, the environment makes it possible."
