Technical Standards

Mayo Graduate School has specified the following nonacademic criteria (technical standards) that all matriculating students must meet to participate in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP).

  1. The applicant or graduate student must be able to participate actively in all aspects of laboratory experimentation. Observation and information acquisition requires functional auditory and somatic sensation.
  2. The applicant or graduate student must be able to communicate in English his or her discoveries to the scientific community. Required communication skills include speaking, reading and writing.
  3. The applicant or graduate student must have sufficient motor function to perform laboratory experiments.
  4. The applicant or graduate student must be able to measure, calculate, reason, analyze and synthesize.
  5. The applicant or graduate student must be capable of developing mature, professional and effective relationships with others.
