Tracks and Mentors

Mayo Clinic faculty in Arizona, through primary or related interests, would be appropriate mentors for Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. students in any of these tracks:

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
    • Biochemistry and Structural Biology
    • Cancer Biology
    • Cell Biology and Genetics
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Clinical and Translational Science
  • Immunology
  • Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
  • Neurobiology of Disease

Choosing a mentor

During or after the rotation period, the student and his or her rotation mentor should have careful discussions to mutually explore whether the match is right for dissertation research and understand expectations for successfully completing a dissertation project. The graduate program director for each track at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and campus director also are available to advise students on mentor selection.

When appropriate, the student and mentor will work together to identify a thesis committee. This may consist entirely of faculty in Arizona, though it more typically includes a combination of faculty from Arizona, other Mayo campuses and possibly extramural institutions.

The student or mentor should notify the assistant dean in Arizona to help initiate planning for transferring to Arizona. Based on the student's course schedule and personal needs, and laboratory considerations, a date will be agreed upon for the student to move to Arizona.
