"I remember the day my sixth grade science teacher explained what it meant to be a scientific researcher. My best friend reached over to poke me and said, 'Becky... that's you.' My friend's keen observation turned out to be accurate, and now I am pursuing my Ph.D. at Mayo Clinic."
Becky is currently immersed in her second year of Mayo Graduate School's Ph.D. Program. She works in a cell biology and genetics laboratory, and loves her life in Rochester.
"I appreciate the flexibility of Mayo Clinic's Ph.D. Program to cross the lines of several medical disciplines. Also the fact that our stipends are paid by Mayo Graduate School for the full five years of training allows breathing room to explore our true research interests. The stipend goes far enough that I am able to own a condominium in Rochester.
I enjoy socializing with my classmates and getting involved in my community. I even love the Minnesota winters."
Becky hopes that her investigations will contribute to what other researchers are doing in the same field.
"I look forward to seeing the results of my experiments. Maybe someday I will see outcomes that no one else has observed before. Hopefully my work will help provide answers to national health problems like cancer."
