Program description

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences offers a Social Work Internship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida. This internship provides in-depth clinical knowledge and skills that enable practitioners to deliver comprehensive social work services in clinical and hospital settings.

The Social Work Internship, which lasts one or two academic semesters, provides high-quality didactic and clinical experiences to prepare a well-rounded, fully competent social worker.

At Mayo Clinic, you:

  • Learn at an internationally renowned medical center that includes a large designated cancer center and organ transplantation program
  • Work with Mayo Clinic physicians, social workers and other allied health professionals as a respected member of the patient care team
  • Serve a large, diverse patient population with a variety of medical conditions

As a social work intern, you develop clinical skills to help patients and their families cope with chronic, acute or terminal illnesses. You may organize support groups for families of patients undergoing organ transplants or those who have cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease or other illnesses.

You also advise family caregivers, counsel patients and help plan for patients' needs after discharge by arranging at-home services, including Meals on Wheels, oxygen equipment, skilled nursing or rehabilitation.

The Social Work Internship provides students with an excellent social work practicum with interaction in a multidisciplinary team setting at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida.

Affiliated institution

To participate in the Social Work Internship, you must be enrolled at our affiliated academic institution, Florida State University College of Social Work in Tallahassee, Florida.


Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a comprehensive medical facility providing advanced programs in education and research that support the highest quality patient care. Campus activity is conducted in the Mayo Clinic Hospital and the interconnected Davis, Mayo and Cannaday buildings.

The ambulatory facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary to specialty care and advanced procedures. Mayo Clinic Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient services, including surgical and medical intensive care units, specialized solid-organ transplant units, and advanced cardiac and neurosurgery facilities.

Mayo Clinic's outpatient and inpatient facilities provide the training areas for the Social Work Internship. In some cases, students also have access to community-based educational opportunities with Mayo Clinic-based programs and facilities. Social work interns have the opportunity to master the case management model of social work and are also involved in utilization review practices.

Mayo Clinic's state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities enhance student clinical experiences and the ability for clinical preceptors to provide high-quality clinical education experiences.

Graduation and certification

Students who have fulfilled all required coursework from their home academic institution are eligible for graduation after completing the Social Work Internship.


For the majority of your Social Work Internship, your learning schedule is determined by the requirements of Florida State University. This typically includes eight-hour days, two to five days a week, depending on the semester and your hour requirements.

Class size

Each year, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences admits up to six students to its Social Work Internship. This ensures you receive one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience.
