To be accepted into the Recreational Therapy Internship, you must:
- Be a senior-level student in a therapeutic recreation program or recreation program with therapeutic recreation emphasis and have completed all classroom academic coursework before applying
- Have completed basic CPR training and certification
- Have completed recommended courses in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology
- Have a primary interest in rehabilitation in a clinical setting
Recreational therapists should be comfortable working with people who are ill or have disabilities. Therapists must be patient, tactful and persuasive when working with people who have a variety of special needs. Ingenuity, a sense of humor and imagination are needed to adapt activities to individual needs. Good physical coordination is necessary to demonstrate or participate in recreational activities.
You must be able to perform the essential functions of the profession and meet the standards of the curriculum. Students seeking exceptions to these standards or reasonable accommodations should initiate their requests with the program director following Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
