Program description

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences offers an eight- to 12-week Physical Therapy Internship in Rochester, Minnesota, for students enrolled in an accredited physical therapy program. The supervised clinical internship opportunities are for both physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students.

The Physical Therapy Internship thoroughly prepares you for practice in your affiliation area, such as acute care, neurological rehabilitation, sports medicine, geriatrics or another area.


Mayo Clinic's Physical Therapy Doctoral Program has been accredited since 1939. It is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.

Graduation and certification

Physical therapy interns graduate from their respective colleges or universities upon successful completion of their fieldwork. They are then responsible for scheduling and completing the national exam through the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Individual states also have their own licensing requirements.


For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule includes eight-hour days, five days a week. While the regular workweek is usually 40 hours, additional projects, patient activities and homework may be assigned.

Class size

Throughout the year, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences admits up to 50 students to its Physical Therapy Internship. This ensures that you receive a comprehensive educational experience with close one-on-one instruction.
