Program description

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona partners with academic affiliates to offer the Occupational Therapy Internship. Both level one (one to two weeks) and level two (12 weeks) internships are available.

The internship is arranged by the academic fieldwork coordinator from your university and is offered after you complete the academic portion of your degree program.

To prepare for a career as an occupational therapist, you must complete an education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, part of the American Occupational Therapy Association. See the association's Find a School page for a list of accredited education programs.

All courses of study require a period of supervised clinical experience (fieldwork) and successful completion of a national certification examination. The fieldwork rotations provide the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to create a well-rounded, fully competent occupational therapist.

Student internships for those studying to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) are not offered at this time.

Throughout your Occupational Therapy Internship, you are exposed to a variety of evaluation tools, adaptive training activities, therapy interventions, equipment, videos and resources. These experiences prepare you for treating adult patients.

Mayo Clinic has two campuses in Arizona. On the Mayo Clinic campus in Phoenix is the state-of-the-art Mayo Clinic Hospital, the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo Clinic. It has been recognized several times by Phoenix magazine as the "Best Hospital in Phoenix."

In 2014, Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona was ranked No. 1 in Arizona and the Phoenix area on U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals list.

The campus includes a 3,000-square-foot multidisciplinary simulation center that simulates real-life patient care situations, enabling learners to practice on sophisticated mannequins in a no-risk environment. Experiential learning enhances patient safety and improves competency assessment of learners through new modes of simulation-based education.

The campus also includes a state-of-the-art education and conference center, which has a 330-seat auditorium and adjacent meeting rooms. The facility serves all types of learners engaging in lifelong learning.

The Mayo Clinic campus in Scottsdale is centered around a beautiful, five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains extensive exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, pharmacy, patient education library, endoscopy suite, and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in numerous medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including outstanding programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation.

Graduation and certification

Upon completion of the Occupational Therapy Internship, you will receive a certificate of completion from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Occupational therapy interns also graduate from their respective university upon successful completion of their fieldwork.

Graduates are then responsible for scheduling and completing their certification tests through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. Those who pass the test are awarded the title of registered occupational therapist. Individual states also may require licensure.

For the majority of the internship, your learning schedule includes eight-hour days, five days a week, and corresponds with your clinical instructor's schedule. Students also are required to work weekends that correspond with the clinical instructor's schedule.

While the regular workweek is usually 40 hours, additional projects, patient activities and homework may be assigned.

Class size

Each year, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences admits approximately 10 students to each of its Occupational Therapy Internship fieldwork rotations at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona. This ensures you receive a comprehensive educational experience with one-on-one training.
