Molecular genetics technologists may obtain a baccalaureate degree in diagnostic genetics from Northern Michigan University or a Master of Science degree in molecular pathology from Texas Tech University. Students from both universities can apply to complete their practical work (internship) at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota.
After graduating from either program, students are eligible to become certified in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCP), by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Northern Michigan University practicum
This program is a joint offering between Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Students obtain a baccalaureate degree in diagnostic genetics by completing seven semesters of coursework at Northern Michigan University and a 24-week practicum in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory on the Mayo Clinic campus.
Students perform DNA purification and extraction methods, Southern blot analysis, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and other specialized techniques for diagnosing inherited (genetic) and acquired disorders. Students are assigned hands-on rotations with specific assays and techniques and are expected to complete an independent research project.
Texas Tech University preceptorship
This program is a joint offering between Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Students obtain a Master of Science degree in molecular pathology by completing 2.5 semesters at Texas Tech University and an eight-week preceptorship in the Molecular Genetics Laboratory on the Mayo Clinic campus.
Students gain experience with DNA purification and extraction methods, Southern blot analysis, and polymerase chain reactions. Assigned hands-on rotations with specific assays and techniques are given to the students as well. Students also observe the roles of genetic counselors, fellows and consultants. Finally, students assess technical aspects of the laboratory.
The diagnostic genetics program at Northern Michigan University and the molecular pathology program at Texas Tech University are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

The high volume of specimens received for genetic testing, the wide repertoire of genetic test services utilizing various clinical assays, state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, and the diverse and highly educated faculty make the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at Mayo Clinic an ideal educational setting for students.
Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, includes an extensive outpatient complex, Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester, and substantial research and education facilities. This Mayo Clinic site is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world.
Graduation and certification
Students from Northern Michigan University are eligible to receive a baccalaureate degree in diagnostic genetics and become certified in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCP), by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Students from Texas Tech University are eligible to receive a Master of Science degree in molecular pathology and become certified in Molecular Biology, MB(ASCP), by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
During the internship, the learning schedule is Monday through Friday, with hours varying based on rotation.
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory wants to ensure that students receive one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience.
For the Northern Michigan University practicum, the Molecular Genetics Laboratory admits one or two students for 24 weeks. For the Texas Tech University preceptorship, the Molecular Genetics Laboratory admits up to four students for eight weeks after they successfully complete an interview process.
