Program description

Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota, offers two four-week athletic training internships (one in June and one in July) that combine an observation-based clinical experience and a hands-on experience with a Rochester-based sports team.

As a student in the internship, you will become better prepared for employment in the sports medicine field. You learn the skills necessary to conduct patient evaluations, develop treatment programs, communicate with physicians and other health sciences professionals, and document patient injuries and status.

Graduation and certification

When you successfully complete the Athletic Training Summer Internship, you receive a certificate of completion from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.

During the clinical portion of the internship, classroom instruction and clinical observation rotations may include eight-hour days, up to five days a week.

During the sports team internship experience, the student intern provides athletic training services under the supervision of a certified athletic trainer at home games or events. That schedule varies depending on the home schedule of the sports team(s) to which you are assigned.

Class size

Each year, Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences admits two students for athletic training internships. One-on-one learning and instruction is emphasized.
