Mayo Clinic's general thoracic surgery practice is the largest in the Midwest and is among the largest in the United States. Mayo surgeons perform high volumes of complex chest surgery procedures using the latest technology and procedure innovations. The general thoracic surgery team is actively involved in many clinical trials looking into the latest treatments for chest diseases.
Mayo Clinic's Division of General Thoracic Surgery provides high-quality, comprehensive diagnosis and surgical care to adult patients. The team is staffed by six board-certified general thoracic surgeons. General thoracic surgeons who are board certified in general thoracic surgery have the training necessary to diagnose and surgically manage disease of the chest.
The general thoracic surgery staff performs more than 1,700 procedures each year. This includes surgical procedures on the chest wall, lungs, trachea, mediastinum, diaphragm and esophagus. Minimally invasive and robotic procedures are also performed.
Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, is one of the largest cardiovascular care centers in the United States and has been ranked first or second in cardiovascular practice on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list since it has been published.
The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester performs more than 3,000 heart operations each year using state-of-the-art technology, including minimally invasive techniques. The team is staffed by 11 board-certified cardiovascular surgeons. This includes surgeons with expertise in transplantation, congenital heart disease and ventricular assist devices. The cardiovascular surgery practice includes on- and off-pump coronary artery bypass, valve repair and replacement, complex congenital heart disease, transplantation, and exposure to ventricular assist devices.
The majority of general thoracic and cardiovascular surgery is performed at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus. It features 70 operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical equipment.
In addition to caring for patients in clinical practice, Mayo Clinic's faculty is committed to teaching and facilitating the growth of medical knowledge. Many of our faculty members have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their fields.
