The advanced general thoracic surgery fellowship is offered to those individuals who have recently successfully completed an approved thoracic surgery residency or its equivalent and desire an additional one or two years to supplement their training in general thoracic surgery. Emphasis is placed on all aspects of general thoracic surgery, including pulmonary resection, esophageal pathology and minimally invasive surgery.
During the year, the fellow participates in the preoperative evaluation, surgical operation and postoperative management of virtually all of the thoracic conditions.
The General Thoracic Surgery Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic Rochester began in 1987. The program has trained thoracic surgeons from all over the world including Ireland, Australia, Korea, Argentina, Canada and India. The trainees have gone back to their home country and established themselves as leaders in the field of General Thoracic Surgery.
