Director's Welcome

Janis Blair M.D.

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona! I am glad you are learning more about our program. We have a very unique setting in which medical school graduates will transform into well-trained internists ready for the next step in their careers.

With more than a century of history as an institution and 20 years in the Arizona desert, Mayo Clinic is a first-rate choice for internal medicine residency training. As educators, our goal is to provide a comprehensive and state-of-the-art experience in internal medicine and to prepare future internists for a lifetime of caring, learning and inquiry — whether their career path leads them to general internal medicine or to a subspecialty field. We accomplish this in a collegial environment that supports the goals of our residents.

Mayo Clinic's campus in Arizona is a unique academic medical center that excels in our three areas of emphasis: patient care, research and education. We have a diverse and accomplished group of physicians on staff, many with national and international reputations. We benefit from the strength and traditions of Mayo pioneers while enjoying the growth and innovation of the Southwest. We count on the resources of a large and well-established research and education enterprise while working together in an intimate setting.

Because Mayo Clinic draws patients from a national and international community, we see varied and fascinating pathology, while at the same time dealing regularly with common illnesses and prevention strategies.

Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona was recently recognized for being the safest teaching hospital in the U.S., is ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report, and has earned numerous high-profile accolades for quality and patient safety. We are excited to open the Arizona campus of Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in the near future.

Mayo Clinic Hospital and the outpatient practices are all part of the same not-for-profit organization. This allows our staff, residents and fellows to work in collaboration across disciplines. As we seek to advance the science of medicine, we focus on our primary value, "the needs of the patient come first."

We are seeking bright, motivated, hard-working young physicians for our program who are excited to learn medicine and advance the science, while establishing lifelong friendships and collaborations.

I welcome you to learn more about our residents and our program — and to consider joining us on the journey.
