Program description

The three-year Family Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, offers:

  • A comprehensive education emphasizing the management and treatment of common problems encountered by family physicians
  • An emphasis on treating the whole patient and his or her family on an ongoing basis
  • A supportive environment with a well-rounded faculty
  • A balance between the opportunities to develop a solid knowledge base in academic and evidence-based medicine and the skills needed to be an outstanding family physician

The Family Medicine Residency is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Program history

The Family Medicine Residency began training its first resident in 1978. Since then, nearly 250 residents have completed training in our program. Each year, eight residents are welcomed into our residency.

Graduate outcomes

The most important sign of the success of any training program is how its graduates fare. Some graduates have pursued academic appointments. One-third of our graduates are practicing in a rural or underserved setting, and one-third of our graduates are practicing obstetrics.
