Responsibilities

The Mayo Clinic Alumni Association (MCAA) actively works to ensure its board of directors is composed of a diverse group of physicians and scientists. Diversity comes from having members who have varied backgrounds, geographic locations, and medical specialties and subspecialties.

Board of directors members:

  • Have the common goal of serving the needs of Mayo Clinic alumni and helping to preserve the mutually beneficial relationships between alumni and Mayo Clinic.
  • Have the opportunity to serve as local ambassadors for the MCAA, and will become knowledgeable about the many programs provided by the MCAA to alumni and trainees.
  • Learn about issues occurring at Mayo Clinic that are important to both alumni and Mayo Clinic. With this information, members can knowledgably communicate with Mayo alumni in their regions and specialty areas.
  • Serve as conduits to bring ideas, information and concerns from alumni back to the MCAA and Mayo Clinic.
  • Assist in establishing the visions and priorities of the MCAA with the ultimate goal of strengthening relationships between alumni and Mayo Clinic.
  • Help ensure a sound fiscal status for the MCAA by setting a strategic direction and providing oversight to the expenditures and investments of the association.
  • Have the opportunity to become involved with various alumni programs to the extent of their interest and available time.
  • Become more familiar with the importance and need for philanthropy at Mayo Clinic and are able to address why philanthropy is needed to preserve Mayo's mission of excellence in practice, education and research.
  • Are not required to be a member of The Doctors Mayo Society as a membership prerequisite. There are many ways to be philanthropic; giving time and talent to the board is one way.
  • Are expected to attend annual board of directors meetings, which are held in conjunction with The Doctors Mayo Society meeting and the biennial meeting of the MCAA. Between meetings, members are kept up to date on MCAA activities through periodic emails, letters and phone calls.
  • If new, will be offered a brief orientation session to assist them in understanding the work of the MCAA and the role of the board members.
  • If experienced, will have the opportunity to serve as a mentor to new board members to help answer their questions and assist them in integrating more effectively with the board.
