Library Management System: Innovative Interfaces, Inc. supplies the library management system software for acquisitions, cataloging, journal control, reserves and the online catalog. The catalog has been segmented to allow searching of specialized collections including online and audiovisual resources, and the resources in the patient libraries.

Bibliographic Retrieval Systems: Several hundred databases are licensed or managed for access by users on the intranet site. Ovid Technologies, Inc. bibliographic retrieval system is the largest single supplier of resources and provides access to a variety of database indexes and full-text resources, including a private bibliographic database called Mayo Authors Database which is a comprehensive database of Mayo Clinic authored publications from 1871 to the present.

Database-driven Content: The library system uses an Structured Query Language (SQL) database as the repository of metadata to populate a variety of searchable and customizable segments on the intranet site, including databases, e-journals, e-books, categorized lists of Web resources, and “How Do I” library instruction information.

SFX linkLink Resolver System: SFX from Ex Libris is the link resolver used by the library system. The resource selection page that results from clicking the blue SFX link includes the following link options: full text when available; online catalog; electronic document delivery; journal impact factors from Thomson ISI (Institute for Scientific Information); and, “Ask a Librarian.”

Drug Information Systems: Micromedex is the primary drug information system which includes links to the Mayo Clinic Formulary. Other systems include Facts & Comparisons Online and a variety of specialized drug information resources.

Service Request Forms: Online service request forms including electronic document delivery and literature search requests are programmed in Cold Fusion and will automatically add clinic address information and bibliographic citation elements (from the link resolver) if the user has created an account and is logged in on “My Library Home Page.”

Electronic Document Delivery:  The Library uses an in-house program, Celsus, to manage the document delivery service for staff and students. The system allows library staff to take existing PDFs or scanned documents, place them on a Web server, and notify the requester via e-mail that the document is ready for pickup.
