HLC Reaccreditation of the College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic

In 2009, the College of Medicine will participate in the Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation process. The College of Medicine is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association. This is the primary accrediting body for Mayo Graduate School and Mayo School of Health Sciences and allows degree-granting for the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. Institutions are reviewed to ensure they continue to meet certain standards in terms of their missions, operations and activities in teaching and student learning, and to identify areas for growth and enhancement.

HLC accreditation is an assurance to the public that an institution of higher learning is properly prepared to do its job. It is akin to a stamp of excellence. Accreditation means that students’ credits and degrees earned at the College of Medicine will be respected by employers and other educational institutions.

The criteria for accreditation are organized under five major headings.

  • Mission and Integrity
  • Preparing for the Future
  • Student Learning and Effective Teaching
  • Acquisition, Discovery, and Application of Knowledge
  • Engagement and Service

As part of the self-study we must address each Core Component of each Criterion Statement and present reasonable and representative evidence of meeting a Criterion.

An important part of this reaccreditation is to solicit feedback from the public and third parties about the College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic and its programs.  We invite interested parties to submit their comments to the HLC in the following ways:
