Minnesota's Future Docs

The medical schools at Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota have developed a pre-medical pipeline program aimed at increasing the number of Minnesota minority, immigrant, and rural physicians. Students are recruited as college freshmen and spend three summers involved in the program. The aim of this program is to engage highly motivated students from ethnic and underprivileged groups and from rural communities.  Many of the students are the first in their families to go to college, and almost all come from households that have incomes below the federal poverty line. The students' life experiences allow them to relate to patients of similar backgrounds and be role models within their communities. Students meet for six weeks for three consecutive summers to participate in medical case studetns, shadow physicians in various specialties, and prepare for the Medical College Admission Test and medical school interviews. Mayo Medical School and the University of Minnesota Medical School cover the full cost of the program, which includes room and board, transportation stipend, and student salary.

Barrett at Mayo Program

Mayo Medical School believes in attracting individuals with strong academic performance and a commitment to medicine and service.  The “Barrett at Mayo Program” is a residential program designed to introduce students from Barrett, The Honors College, to Mayo Medical School through a two week interactive program at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota.  Students are not only  introduced to Mayo Medical School students and faculty, but they will also have the opportunity to experience life as a student through tours of Mayo Clinic, shadowing, formal lectures, small group discussions and case studies.  Selected students receive stipend for their two week mini-internship at Mayo Clinic Rochester and participate in post program follow up at Mayo Clinic Arizona campus.
