IBM EX.I.T.E. Camp
2006 launched Mayo Clinic's collaboration with IBM in Rochester, Minn., to participate in the EX.I.T.E. camp (Exploring Interests in Technology and Engineering), which encourages young women to pursue scientific interests. There are 51 similar camps around the world. The camps strive to gather diverse groups of girls who may not have the chance to explore such areas at school or home. At Mayo, the girls were able to meet researchers and participate in exciting projects. At the Clinic's Advanced Genomics Technology Center, they isolated strands of their own DNA to keep on necklaces. The girls also visited the Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, where they saw adult and baby mannequins, and a simulation of a trauma patient. For more information, visit the EX.I.T.E web site.
Health Science Careers Program
Mayo Clinic is a supporter of the Health Science Careers Center in collaboration with Rochester Public Schools and Rochester Community and Technical College. The center provides state-of-the-art classroom and lab space that simulates a real health care setting. The year-long course offered through Rochester Public Schools is designed for high school juniors and seniors, and helps students learn the industry requirements for a number of health care careers in specific areas including clinical laboratory, radiology, respiratory therapy, clinical pastoral care, doctors, nurses, first responders, pharmacists, dentists, veterinary technicians and others. Students also have clinical experiences in a community health care setting. For more information, log onto the Rochester Public Schools website.

The Leo F. Black Health Career Scholarships
Application Deadline: Late March - awards announced late April
The Leo F. Black Health Career Scholarships are awarded each year to graduating high school seniors planning to pursue a career in health care or medicine. This program encourages minority high school students to pursue health care careers. The first year, five scholarships of $500 each were awarded to students within Duval County. Since that time the program has grown in scope and size. In 2000 the name was changed to the Leo F. Black Health Career Scholarship in honor of the retiring Chair of the Mayo Jacksonville Board of Governors. Today scholarships of $1000 are awarded, and all students residing in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns Counties in Florida are eligible. In January of each year application packets are sent to high school counselors and principals for distribution. Scholarships are based on academic achievement, financial need, input from the high school counselor and an essay written by the student. Over 140 scholarships have been awarded since 1992.
