Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Mayo Clinic, the country's largest private group practice, has a robust School of Continuing Medical Education. When you participate in CME courses, you’ll experience the most up-to-date medical and scientific knowledge delivered through learner-friendly formats, so you can immediately apply it to your practice. We have knowledgeable, experienced faculty who are leaders in their fields and passionate about education. Interactive programs teach new medical and surgical methods based on the latest biomedical research and evidence-based medical practices. Our CME activity is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Educational offerings are subject to rigorous needs assessments, ensuring relevant topics and useful education. All courses are planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Standards of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

Mayo Visiting Clinician Program

Mayo Clinic offers customized educational experiences for visiting clinicians that are not available through conventional CME courses or formal graduate education programs. Through the Visiting Clinician Program, Mayo Clinic hosts nearly 200 physicians each year from around the world, making it one of the largest and most successful of its kind.

Mayo specifically focuses training in subspecialties that will provide the best experiences, enabling visitors to return home with knowledge and skills that can be directly applied to their practice. See http://www.mayo.edu/cme/visiting-clinician.html for more information

Regional Visiting Faculty Program

The Mayo Clinic Regional Visiting Faculty Program (RVFP) is a valuable continuing medical education resource made available to regional medical audiences. The program enables practicing clinicians, surgeons, residents and other medical professionals to learn from Mayo Clinic experts. The RVFP offers flexible formats tailored to your needs. An emphasis is placed on helping today's medical professionals understand and apply the latest research and evidence-based care protocols to improve patient outcomes. Faculty Development

Mayo Clinic has faculty development opportunities embedded in all schools and clinical areas. Some opportunities are offered through traditional human resources channels, others are designed by the CME school. Mayo considers itself to be a learning organization and developing the talents of our faculty is a top priority.

Mayo Clinic Career and Leadership Development (CALD)

Philosophy of CALD (Values)
Physician/scientist leadership is a guiding Mayo principle. Therefore, it is incumbent of this organization to invest time and other resources in teaching and developing physicians/scientists as individual leaders and as leaders of groups. At Mayo Clinic, physicians/scientists must engage in the organization, and that engagement takes the forms of providing patient care, involvement in education, involvement in research, and involvement in administration. Mayo Clinic encourages our physicians and scientisits to be involved in leadership positions both within and outside of the institution. It is our belief that leadership skills can be learned and that developing these skills is a long-term strategy. The primary responsibility for individual development rests with the individual and the respective department or division chair. Mayo Clinic, through CALD, provides and supports leadership development and enrichment activities through:

  1. A structured orientation program, acculturating new physicians and scientists to this organization, and clarifying the roles and responsibilities of Mayo Clinic physicians and researchers as leaders.
  2. Structured, targeted, and dynamic development initiatives to impart practical job-related leadership skills to leadership teams and individuals.
  3. Individually tailored leadership assessment and development opportunities at each Mayo Clinic campus.
  4. Programs are planned by the Career and Leadership Development committee. Membership of the committee includes clinical, research, and administrative staff from a variety of specialty areas.
