Mayo Clinic recognizes the health care quality chasm that exists between Americans of different ethnic and racial ancestry. The poverty rate for non-Hispanic whites is at 10 percent, while the rate for Hispanic and African American children is three times higher at 30 percent. Forty percent to 52% of all uninsured persons, regardless of income status, have no usual source of health care. African Americans continue to experience higher rates of morbidity and mortality from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, HIV/AIDS, and asthma. Hispanic Americans experience increased rates of morbidity and mortality from heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Mayo Clinic’s Diversity in Clinical Research office is one mechanism we harness to improve the health outcomes of all Americans. The research mission of Mayo is to build stronger science-based research involving and interacting with communities of color. This research area regularly collaborates with community-based organizations to connect with medically underserved populations.
