Healthcare Delivery Research Scholars Program (HEDER Scholars)

Mayo Clinic Healthcare Delivery Research Scholars Program (HEDER Scholars) is a pilot program in the Mayo Clinic Healthcare Delivery Research Program that trains clinicians in health services research. Health services research applies tools from the applied sciences (epidemiology, statistics, economics sociology, etc.) in order to study and improve healthcare delivery. This mentored training experience is an intensive, career-shifting experience for highly motivated faculty and trainees who want to devote a significant portion of their career to health services research. Scholars will submit a competitive extramural career development award prior to the completion of the program.

Program Objective

The objective of this program is to train and develop clinician health services researchers to rigorously assess and improve patient centered health outcomes, and meet the needs of the Healthcare Delivery Research Program in the Center for the Science of Healthcare Delivery.

Basic Program Features

Two Tracks

  • Faculty/Staff track: 2 year, 40 percent FTE (20/20 matching by HEDER and clinical departments)
  • Trainee track: 1-2 year clinical fellow track (80-90 percent FTE)

Scholar Activities

  • Mentored research
  • Personalized training
    • Graduate school courses (with certificate option) in health services research methods
    • Grant writing


  • Any doctoral-trained clinician
  • Intense interest in pursuing a career in health services research
  • Demonstrated dedicated research time and departmental support
  • Evidence of outstanding professional performance, pursuit of excellence, and dedication
