Publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals is a critical component of a successful research career. A record of high-profile publications can lead to career advancement, tenure, increased intramural and extramural funding, and the opportunity to collaborate with leading investigators in your field.

Yet, most investigators have had little formal training in how to write for journals or navigate the publishing world.

"Writing for Biomedical Publications," a workshop taught by David C. Morrison, Ph.D., and Christopher J. Papasian, Ph.D., includes a lecture component and interactive exercises. Students receive an extensive handout and examples of good and poor publications.

At the completion of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the four key elements required to be successful in preparing and publishing high-quality manuscripts in the biomedical field
  • Know what factors to consider in the selection of target journals for manuscript submission
  • Appreciate the complex interactive and interdependent role that authors, editors and reviewers play in the publication process
  • Know and be able to apply critical tests to determine who should (and who should not) be included as co-authors on manuscripts submitted for publication
  • Create charts, tables and figures that effectively communicate information in the results section of a manuscript
  • Develop an appropriate cover letter and complete submission forms for submitting manuscripts for publication consideration
  • Understand the various legal and ethical issues involved with publication of manuscripts, including copyright, conflict of interest, financial disclosure and more
  • Effectively respond to critiques of reviewed manuscripts provided by reviewers in preparation for resubmission of a manuscript
  • Understand exactly what plagiarism is and how to avoid it
