The Mayo Clinic Health System Practice-Based Research Network (MCHS PBRN) engages in research that aims to directly improve care for patients, populations and communities. Examples of types of research:

  • Observational studies
  • Practice-guideline development research
  • Dissemination, implementation and diffusion research
  • Outcomes research in primary care and community-based health care settings

Priority for MCHS PBRN resources will be given to projects that reach a broad audience and focus on health care at a community or population level. Examples of recent research topics:

  • Asthma
  • Use of decision aids in diabetes care
  • Hypotension in the elderly
  • Use of medications at the end of life

The MCHS PBRN is currently developing these ideas:

  • Mindfulness-based stress-reduction training
  • Community health workers for diabetes care in Hispanic populations
  • A pilot study assessing the 30-day readmission rate in patients at risk of dementia
  • Implementation and evaluation of a diabetes peer-mentoring group

The MCHS PBRN does not conduct phase I, II or III evaluations of pharmacological agents or devices, basic science, or discovery research.
