Appointment Terms
Short-term appointments
Physicians who wish to visit for less than four full weeks may do so without going through the formal application process. You may make arrangements for such a visit by writing directly to the Mayo Clinic department in your area of interest at the Mayo practice site you wish to visit.
Long-term appointments
This option is designed for practicing physicians to provide an experience tailored to the individual's continuing education and career goals. Appointments are typically four full weeks to three months in length.
Educational Opportunities
- Specific educational activities of your appointment will be determined in cooperation with a Mayo Clinic staff member in your chosen area of study.
- Opportunities may include observation of specialty-oriented inpatient and outpatient care and diagnostic lab activities, as well as attendance of grand rounds, department conferences, seminars and other educational events.
- Many resources of Mayo Clinic Medical Libraries, one of the largest medical library systems in the world, are available to visiting clinicians.
Note: Patient-related activities are limited to clinical observation only. Visiting clinicians are not allowed to provide patient care services at Mayo Clinic. Also, the Visiting Clinician Program involves no research activities. This is a continuing medical education experience . It is not formal medical education or training and cannot be credited toward any clinical requirements for medical specialty board certification.
Application Process
Qualifications
To apply for an appointment, you must:
- Have completed medical school and ALL formal postgraduate training (residency, fellowship, etc) in the specialty you are wishing to visit at Mayo.
- Possess language competency in oral and written English and provide either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score or other equivalent test of English score to the Coordinator of the Visiting Clinician Program. If neither test is available, a telephone interview with the Coordinator is necessary to assess your English competency.
- Have an appropriate U.S. State Department visa if traveling from outside the United States . Mayo's Exchange Visitor Visa Program may be appropriate for some appointees.
Finances
All travel and living costs associated with a visit to Mayo Clinic are the responsibility of the visiting clinician or visitor's institution.
Insurance
Visiting clinicians are not eligible for Mayo Clinic medical insurance programs. You are required to have your own medical and hospital insurance coverage.
Apply
To apply for an appointment in the Visiting Clinician Program:
- Begin by writing a letter of inquiry to the Mayo Clinic department or staff member you wish to visit.
- If an appointment is available, you will be asked to submit an application form and two letters of recommendation - one from your chief of staff and one from another physician well acquainted with your goals and current practice.
- Upon approval of the appointment by the Mayo Clinic department, a formal acceptance letter will be sent to you.
- After your visit, you will receive a visit verification letter acknowledging your participation in the Visiting Clinician Program.
