Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville offers exceptional educational experiences for visiting physicians and clinical scientists that are customized to your personal continuing education and career goals.
Appointment Term
Appointments typically last from a few days up to three months.
Educational Opportunities
- Specific educational activities of your appointment will be determined in cooperation with a Mayo Clinic staff member in your chosen area of study.
- Opportunities may include observation of specialty-oriented inpatient and outpatient care and diagnostic lab activities, as well as attendance of grand rounds, department conferences, seminars and other educational events.
- Many resources of Mayo Clinic Medical Libraries, one of the largest medical library systems in the world, are available to visiting clinicians.
Note: Patient-related activities are limited to observation only. Visiting clinicians are not allowed to provide patient care services at Mayo Clinic. This is a continuing medical education experience. It is not formal medical education or training and cannot be credited toward any clinical requirements for medical specialty board certification.
Application Process
Qualifications
To apply for an appointment, you must:
- Have completed medical training and cannot be enrolled in another formal medical training program.
- Possess language competency in oral and written English.
- Have an appropriate U.S. State Department visa if traveling from outside the United States. Mayo's Exchange Visitor Visa Program may be appropriate for some appointees.
Finances
All travel and living costs associated with a visit to Mayo Clinic are the responsibility of the visiting clinician or visitor's institution.
Insurance
Visiting clinicians are not eligible for Mayo Clinic medical insurance programs. You are required to have your own medical and hospital insurance coverage.
Apply
To apply for an appointment in the Visiting Clinician Program:
- Begin by writing a letter of inquiry to the Mayo Clinic department or staff member you wish to visit.
- You will be asked to submit an application form and two letters of recommendation - one from your chief of staff and one from another physician well acquainted with your goals and current practice.
- Upon approval of the appointment, a formal acceptance letter is sent to successful applicants.
- After your visit, you will receive a visit verification letter from the Mayo Clinic acknowledging your participation in the Visiting Clinician Program.
