Microvascular Surgery Skills Training Course
January 1 - December 31, 2010

This intensive, hands-on surgical training program is designed for staff, residents and fellows in surgery programs requiring the use of microvascular surgery. The week-long curriculum is offered weekly throughout the year, and utilizes demonstrations, skills practice and lecture components in the implementation of microvascular surgical techniques.

Transoral Laser Microsurgery for Head and Neck Cancer
April 15 - 17, 2010

This course is designed to give otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, and head and neck oncologists a focused educational experience in transoral endoscopic techniques to resect primary head and neck tumors. Transoral laser microsurgery will be the primary focus with additional education in other transoral techniques including robotics. This course will feature renowned guests and Mayo Clinic faculty, using didactic lectures that are supplemented with video clips, live surgical cases and case discussions. Topics include:

  • Indications, techniques and outcomes
  • Principles of tumor exposure
  • Benefits of various laser wavelengths
  • Instrumentation including fiber technology and robotics
  • Appropriate patient selection
  • Postoperative management
  • Role of transoral surgery in the multidisciplinary treatment model of care
  • On Saturday, April 17, 2010, an optional hands-on workshop will provide participants with opportunities to perform various transoral procedures with laser technologies and delivery systems on both animal and human cadaveric models. Faculty will emphasize fundamental transoral laser microsurgery techniques and wound exposure, as well as feature other transoral techniques. Workshop participants will return to their clinical practice with experience in the art of tumor exposure using various retractors and appropriate and safe use of multiple laser and other transoral systems. Enrollment in the workshop is limited so plan to register early!

    Mayo Clinic Disorders of the Wrist
    May 20 - 23, 2010

    This course is designed for orthopedic and plastic surgeons with a significant hand practice. It covers the spectrum of disorders of the wrist and distal radioulnar joint. The format is case-oriented, covering topics in bony and soft tissue trauma, degenerative disease, and inflammatory arthritis, to name a few. Videotaped surgery clips and cadaveric surgical dissection will be used to demonstrate complicated surgical procedures.

    The course begins with a review of normal wrist anatomy and mechanics, including examination maneuvers, imaging modalities and surgical exposures. The pertinent features of each wrist disorder are highlighted, followed by detailed descriptions of treatment techniques and outcomes. Case examples will be presented prior to each didactic session, followed by open discussion. Breakout sessions will provide more in-depth coverage of specific wrist topics and provide updates on advances in arthroscopy and arthroplasty from recognized experts in the field. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cases to discuss with the faculty. Special times for these exchanges will be arranged.

    Pre-conference Workshop

    On Thursday, May 20, an optional pre-course skills training session will provide an opportunity to review normal hand and wrist anatomy. Under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Berger and Dr. Steven Moran, participants will perform a cadaveric dissection of the hand and wrist, view surgical demonstrations and practice technique.

    Unfortunately, this workshop is currently limited to 50 participants. It offers a concurrent dry laboratory session running a live video feed directly from the hands-on skills lab. Conference faculty are available to moderate the dry lab session.

    Surgical Treatment of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Neoplasms

    This 2-day course, with an optional pre-course hands-on cadaver lab option, is designed primarily for surgeons with interest in hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) neoplasia.     Mayo Clinic International Vascular Symposium
    September 8 - 10, 2011

    The purpose of this conference is to provide an overview of the current issues in peripheral vascular disease to the vascular practioner/specialist through didactic and interactive segments with inclusion of scientific sessions. This conference will highlight the multidisciplinary approach to vascular disease, including vascular surgery, vascular medicine, interventional radiology, and cardiology. This conference is expected to attract international vascular disease specialists, in addition to nurse and allied health care providers interested in peripheral vascular disease. This meeting will include interactive sessions with review of Mayo and European guidelines of arterial and venous disease evaluation and management.
