Minimally Invasive Surgery Series 2008

This course is being offered September 26, 2008 and December 12, 2008. Laparoscopic colectomy has an ever-expanding role in the treatment of colon and rectal disease. This course will cover the inidcations and techniques of laparoscopic colon surgery for both benigh and malignant disease of the colon and rectum. 3rd Annual Practical Course in Dermoscopy and Update on Malignant Melanoma
October 3 - 5, 2008

This is a three-day program for dermatologists, oncologists, physicians in internal medicine, family practice and general practice. The first day is an update on melanoma epidemiology, prevention, pathology, radiologic imaging for diagnosis, and treatment. It focuses on cutting-edge information that brings new therapy from the basic science arena. The last two days are an in-depth immersion into dermoscopy. The information will target both the novice and experienced dermoscopist. It will include a comprehensive exposure to dermoscopic evaluation of melanocytic and nonmelanocytic lesions. Participants will develop practical skills that will enable them to be more comfortable approaching patients with atypical skin lesions. This course is primarily targeted to clinicians, but educators and residents will find it valuable as a springboard to develop dermoscopy training programs.

21st Annual Techniques in Advanced Laparoscopic & Gynecologic Surgery
October 16 - 19, 2008

This course, designed for gynecologists and gynecologic surgeons, will provide an in-depth review of the latest laparoscopic, robotic and hysteroscopic techniques in gynecologic surgery. It is designed to bridge the gap between journals, textbooks and surgical atlas, and the operating room by providing practical and technical information not otherwise available. By request, we will offer an optional 8 hour hands-on workshop in the preceding two days, to cover intra and extracorporeal suturing, basics of laparoscopic orientation, dissection of ureter and uterine artery, removal of ectopic pregnancy, suturing of ureteral injury, closure of myotomy and closure of vaginal cuff. (Space is limited – pre-registration is required). Those registered for the workshop will be able to practice independently, in their free afternoon time following the didactic portion of the program.

Update in Hospital Medicine
November 12 - 15, 2008

Hospital Medicine is the fastest growing subset of Internal Medicine and is in the process of growing into a new specialty complete with its own practitioners, body of literature, and core competencies. Presently, there are estimated to be more than 10,000 practitioners who identify themselves as hospitalists, and that number is expected to reach over 15,000 by 2010. This educational course will address many of the challenges faced by hospital-based healthcare professionals, and it will provide a forum for the exchange of clinical information and practice ideas to enhance delivery of healthcare in the in-patient setting. Topics that will be discussed include the use of corticosteroids in the hospital, updates in critical care and pulmonology, in-patient dermatology, pain management, evidence-based alternative medicine modalities in the hospital, glycemic control in the hospital, acupuncture, in-patient ethics, delirium management, and cardiovascular disease. The course format will feature clinical updates, case presentations, and panel discussions utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to caring for the whole patient and their family.
