Advanced Techniques in Shoulder Arthroscopy, Arthroplasty and Fractures is an intensive, hands-on skills course for orthopedic surgeons treating disorders of the shoulder. This year's course will focus on: arthritis, arthroscopy, arthroplasty, reverse shoulder arthroplasty, minimally invasive repair of rotator cuff pathology, techniques for addressing shoulder instability, fractures, and open and minimally invasive techcniques for fracture reduction and fixation. Laboratory experience using cadaver specimens complimented by didactic lectures provide a comprehensive approach to the course material. In addition, live video demonstrations and panel discussions will be used to further enhance the learning experience.

ABIM SEP Medical Knowledge Module: Women’s Health (Module 89-H)

Valvular Heart Disease: New Strategies. Non-Invasive, Interventional and Surgical Approaches
May 5 - 7, 2008

Valvular Heart Disease: New Strategies will provide a comprehensive, state of the art, panorama of the new pathophysiologic insights, diagnostic methods, surgical and medical therapeutic approaches for valvular heart diseases and project the new strategies available. Valvular Heart Disease is a major world-wide problem despite the decline of rheumatic heart disease due to the emergence of new causes of valve diseases and the expected aging of the population in the new millennium. The course will provide expert review of new types of surgical interventions of the latest progress in reparative techniques and of the new prostheses available. The alternative options of medical treatment with new and potent drugs and of percutaneous catheter-based interventions with newly developed devices will be discussed. The controversial issue of intervention in asymptomatic patients and the new insights in the selection process for this type of patients will be debated. The latest development in Doppler echocardiographic concepts and their application in clinical practice will be presented didactically. The daunting problem of left ventricular dysfunction due to valvular heart disease and its analysis from bench to bedside will be discussed.

Biological Frontiers of Alcohol Addiction
May 30, 2008

This course will focus on reviewing the clinical implications of developing biological etiological models for the treatment of addiction. Topics to be covered will incorporate new research findings and will include a review of susceptibility genes related to addiction, the rapid translation of basic science to the clinic, pharmacotherapeutic strategies for treatment, and individualized approaches to the treatment of patients with addiction and comorbid psychiatric diagnoese. Current Topics in Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging

This course will provide radiologists, cardiologists, vascular and cardiovascular surgeons and other health care providers a state-of-the art review of current and emerging trends in cardiovascular imaging. Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis: Acquired Demyelinating Disorders in Children and Adolescents
June 27 - 28, 2008

This course is intended for primary care providers and specialists who see children and adolescents when they develop acute neurologic dysfunction. These events may be due to acquired demyelinating lesions of the Central Nervous System (CNS). This course will make attendees familiar with clinical findings which should suggest the possibility of acquired CNS demyelination. Typical imaging findings, laboratory diagnostic studies and protocols to differentiate from other neurologic syndromes will be discussed. Treatment of acute episodes and long term disease modifying therapies will be considered. Cognitive impact and social implications for children with acquired CNS demyelinating disorders and their families will be reviewed. Current and future research trends will be presented.

This multidisciplinary course will allow medical professionals and families an opportunity to network.

Families of children with MS and children with MS are invited to attend this meeting and encouraged to attend special break- out sessions as noted in the program schedule.

Mayo Clinic 2008 EUS Course
July 31 - August 2, 2008

This course is designed to provide endsonographers, gastroenterologists, and other health care providers at all levels of experience a comprehensive multidisciplinary review of endoscopic ultrasound. Nationally renowned experts from varying fields, including Gastroenterology, Pancreatology, Hepatology, Surgery (thoracic, abdominal, colorectal), Oncology, Pulmonology, Radiology and Endosonography, will discuss the impact and role of EUS in their practice. Bleeding and Thrombosing Diseases: 2008 Mayo Update
August 12 - 15, 2008

Wet Workshop ( August 12 ) - Following orientation presentations, participants will form teams for testing and evaluation of four "unknown" plasma specimens using coagulation instrumentation, reagents and technical specialists at each of six workstations. Following testing and evaluation, workshop faculty will lead a discussion of results and interpretations, including comments about the clinical disorders studied and the comparability or diversity of results and interpretations obtained with different instruments or reagents. Participation is limited to 150 registrants.

Coagulation Conference ( August 13-15 )- This 13th Mayo coagulation conference will provide reviews and updates about laboratory and clinical aspects of bleeding and thrombosing disorders. Didactic presentations will be supplemented with panel discussions and case presentations. Adequate time will be allocated for questions.

    Practical Surgical Pathology
    September 11 - 13, 2008

    The Practical Surgical Pathology conference will address common but difficult diagnostic problems encountered by the pathologist in everyday practice.     The 2008 Pediatric Cardiology Board Review Course will be a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of all aspects of pediatric cardiology.     3rd Mayo Clinic Angiogenesis Symposium: State of the Art Connections From Biology to Translational
    October 24 - 26, 2008

    The main goal of our symposium is to bring together basic science and clinical experts in the field of angiogenesis to facilitate the exchange of ideas and science involving basic biology and pathways of angiogenesis and new anti-angiogenic agents that can be used for specific targeting of tumor blood vessels and stroma. Moreover, the clinician scientists will present the results of ongoing clinical trials on anti-angiogenic therapy. This symposium will be a strong link in the establishment of a Mayo Clinic Angiogenesis Program. Furthermore, novel genetic as well as imaging methods to assess tumor vasculature for monitoring the effectiveness of angiogenic response in the pre-clinical and clinical trials will be discussed in this symposium. Overall, the symposium will assist in establishing strong collaborations among leading national, international, and Mayo Clinic experts in the field.

    18th Annual Mayo Clinic Symposium on Sports Medicine
    November 14 - 15, 2008

    Symposium Description This two-day course is designed to provide the latest diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients with sports and musculoskeletal injuries. The format of this program is case oriented, providing an integrated approach to the injured athlete. The use of an audience response system (ARS), didactic lectures, and live instruction in examination techniques, joint anatomy, and arthroscopy are used to create an interactive and dynamic learning format. This year’s mini-symposium focuses on ankle injuries. Live demonstrations of ankle examination, anatomy, and arthroscopy will occur. Additional mini-symposium topics include trauma and overuse syndromes, radiographic evaluation, and ultrasound guided injections for the ankle. Other sessions include: • Decision making in sports medicine • Athletic eye and dental injuries • Complex knee trauma in the field of play • Meniscal tears • Cardiovascular conditions in athletes • Physeal injuries in pediatric athletes • Hand and wrist injuries • Use of performance enhancing drugs in sports In addition, Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center staff, including orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, physical therapists, sports psychologists, and athletic trainers will present the latest clinical and research findings related to the treatment of active populations.

    Advanced Radiology Life Support
    January 1 - December 31, 2009

    The Advanced Radiology Life Support (ARLS) course is designed to focus on the unique, life-threatening emergencies that occur within a radiology department. It is designed to teach prompt recognition and treatment of contrast reactions. The ARLS course will discuss management of the sedated patient, the proper management of an airway in an emergency situation and percutaneous interventions. Basic concepts of advanced life support will also be reviewed. This course is fashioned after the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course that has been successful in teaching physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel patient management during cardiac arrest. This course will also offer self assessment modules for recertification purposes required by the American Board of Radiology.
