Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis: Acquired Demyelinating Disorders in Children and Adolescents
June 27 - 28, 2008
This course is intended for primary care providers and specialists who see children and adolescents when they develop acute neurologic dysfunction. These events may be due to acquired demyelinating lesions of the Central Nervous System (CNS). This course will make attendees familiar with clinical findings which should suggest the possibility of acquired CNS demyelination. Typical imaging findings, laboratory diagnostic studies and protocols to differentiate from other neurologic syndromes will be discussed. Treatment of acute episodes and long term disease modifying therapies will be considered. Cognitive impact and social implications for children with acquired CNS demyelinating disorders and their families will be reviewed. Current and future research trends will be presented.
This multidisciplinary course will allow medical professionals and families an opportunity to network. Families of children with MS and children with MS are invited to attend this meeting and encouraged to attend special break- out sessions as noted in the program schedule.

Genetic Disposition and Patient-Reported Quality of Life Outcomes
February 26, 2009
Much progress has been made in recent years into the impact of genetics on cancer and its treatment. Advances have also been made in finding ways to incorporate the patients' subjective experience into clinical research. Indeed, validated quality-of-life instruments are now available and empirical evidence about disease and treatment outcomes has been collected for most disease sites and treatment modalities. Perhaps the most provocative finding is that quality of life can be superior to clinical assessments for predicting cancer patients' survival.
Recent data provided preliminary evidence that the genetic disposition of cancer patients may impact their quality of life. This one-day course will explore the genetic disposition of quality of life in cancer patients by reviewing the evidence and setting a research agenda for identifying potential genes and genetic variants for quality of life.
