The 2013 Psychiatric Nursing Conference will explore the many facets of trauma, including biological, chemical, and behavioral, along with methods to treat and/or ameliorate the effects from the trauma. Long term follow-up for recovery in the aftermath of traumas will be discussed. Other highlights to be addressed are the language of recovery, self-care, and using literature to discuss depression.

This course will present biological models of addictive disorders and evidenced-based treatments of addictions. Topics will incorporate new research on the biological basis for genomic subtypes of addiction. Emphasis will be on the translation of basic science to the clinic, strategies for pharmacotherapy, incorporating a biologic framework of addiction into addiction psychoeducation and programming, and individualized approaches to the treatment of addictions with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Outcomes based research using clinical electronic databases to enhance follow-up will also be discussed as well as the bioethics guiding the assessment and treatment of addiction as an illness.

This interactive course focuses on recent developments in the diagnosis, assessment and multimodal treatment planning for pediatric mood disorders and related conditions, such as suicidal behavior, addressing bullying, substance abuse and trauma. Course faculty emphasize an evidence-based approach and highlight cutting-edge research findings with regard to treatment, such as structured psychotherapeutic techniques, recent pharmacologic research and emerging brain stimulation therapies in adolescent depression. The morning session includes video vignettes to guide interactive, focused didactic sessions. This is followed by an afternoon session composed of breakout sessions to reinforce and elaborate on group didactic sessions. These sessions also facilitate challenging case discussions (generated by participants and course faculty) and treatment planning for children and adolescents with affective disorders.
