Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Optimize an ultrasound image and demonstrate a basic ultrasound examination of lower limb target structures (joints, tendons, nerves, ligaments, muscles).
  • Demonstrate ultrasound protocols to examine commonly affected lower limb regions (e.g., lateral hip, anterior knee, tarsal tunnel).
  • Describe the sonographic appearance of commonly encountered pathologies in the lower limb, as well as the adjunctive role of ultrasound-guided procedures in the treatment of these pathologies.
  • Outline the steps necessary for successful completion of an ultrasound-guided procedure and dynamically track needles using ultrasound guidance.
  • Discuss the role of ultrasound in the evaluation of the lower-limb nerves, the post-operative hip, and the athlete with thigh pain.
  • Describe and identify sonographic findings commonly encountered in patients with rheumatological diseases.
  • Discuss the role of ultrasound guidance in the treatment of lumbar spine and pelvic disorders (e.g., facetogenic pain, sacroiliacdisorders, piriformis syndrome, obturator internus pain).
