Pain Medicine: A State-of-the-Art Course in Pain Management for the Non-Pain Specialist
March 5 - 7, 2009
There is an increasing need for primary care physicians to have more understanding of pain management and to be able to work in collaboration with pain management specialists and better understand how, when, and why to refer their patients for specialized pain care. This course will provide an update on critical issues in the management of chronic pain to address the national and international movement toward improved pain control in chronic non-cancer and cancer pain.
The Injection Workshop and ABFM-SAM will be held simultaneously. Injection Workshop: Please indicate either Thursday or Friday.
ABFM-SAM-Pain Management: is a two-session series (Thursday and Friday). Both sessions are necessary to obtain ABFM credit.

Electromyography and Electroencephalography in Clinical Practice

Course Description
This course is designed as a review of basic concepts of nerve conduction studies, needle EMG, EEG, evoked potentials, intraoperative monitoring, and autonomic and sleep studies. Techniques, interpretation, and the electrodiagnostic approaches to clinical disorders will be emphasized. The focus is on clinical correlation of various neurophysiologic tests used for the evaluation of patients with peripheral nerve and neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, and sleep disorders. The program format includes lectures, practical demonstrations, videos, group discussions and workshops, for optimal learning. Participants will have the opportunity to observe EMG techniques on normal subjects in the laboratory, and directly interact with the faculty during these workshops. A syllabus will be provided to participants. Presentations will be made by members of the staff of Mayo Clinic and faculty of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine from the Departments of Neurology in Jacksonville, Florida, Rochester, Minnesota, and Scottsdale, Arizona.
Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Develop a logical approach to the use of standard clinical electrophysiological techniques in the evaluation of common and uncommon neuromuscular disorders encountered in clinical practice.
• Explain the basic concepts of clinical neurophysiology.
• Interpret the findings and clinical significance of abnormalities on nerve conduction studies.
• Interpret the clinical significance of EMG waveforms on needle examination.
• Identify technical pitfalls associated with EEG and the normal and variant patterns of pediatric and adult patients.
• Interpret the findings and clinical significance of abnormalities on EEG studies.
• Integrate the various clinical neurophysiology studies in the evaluation of patients with disorders of the central nervous system

Emergency Medicine 2009: Moving Forward
March 15 - 18, 2009
This conference is Monday-Wednesday, March 16-18, with optional lectures and workshop on Sunday March 15, 2009. The format for Sunday is 30-60 minute didactic lectures in the morning with a Hands on Ultrasound Techniques Workshop in the afternoon for smaller groups. The Monday - Wednesday lecture schedule runs from 7:00 am until 12:30 pm. The primary educational goal of this conference is to present topics which are seen in everyday emergency medicine practices that were not covered adequately in residency to practicing and academic emergency medicine physicians as well as for primary care. The course is intended for physicians, PA's and nurses who work in the emergency department.
