Practical Surgical Pathology
September 11 - 13, 2008

The Practical Surgical Pathology conference will address common but difficult diagnostic problems encountered by the pathologist in everyday practice. Every effort will be made to present cases of common practical value. Participants and faculty will review case histories, examine case images and formulate the diagnosis. The unique subtleties and differentiating characteristics of each diagnosis are then highlighted. Faculty and participants will also discuss strategies for managing each patient’s case. Images of all cases presented will be provided on a DVD to be viewed by virtual microscopy.

Throughout the two and one-half days of the conference, 32 cases will be presented and discussed. Audience participation is strongly encouraged.

Integration Through Community Laboratory Insourcing
October 1 - 3, 2008

Critical patient care decisions frequently require immediate access to important laboratory results. A community-based laboratory can provide continuity across the continuum of care benefiting patients, physicians and the health system. This concept, defined as laboratory outreach, presents the following advantages: increased hospital revenue, lower fixed cost per test, reduced excess lab capacity, faster turnaround times and lower overall costs per episode of care.

The development, implementation and growth of a successful laboratory outreach program is a critical component of health system integration. This course will present a practical approach to all aspects of developing and growing a successful laboratory outreach program. Experienced faculty will share their knowledge on how a laboratory can reach its maximum potential.

3rd Mayo Clinic Angiogenesis Symposium: State of the Art Connections From Biology to Translational
October 24 - 26, 2008

The main goal of our symposium is to bring together basic science and clinical experts in the field of angiogenesis to facilitate the exchange of ideas and science involving basic biology and pathways of angiogenesis and new anti-angiogenic agents that can be used for specific targeting of tumor blood vessels and stroma. Moreover, the clinician scientists will present the results of ongoing clinical trials on anti-angiogenic therapy. This symposium will be a strong link in the establishment of a Mayo Clinic Angiogenesis Program. Furthermore, novel genetic as well as imaging methods to assess tumor vasculature for monitoring the effectiveness of angiogenic response in the pre-clinical and clinical trials will be discussed in this symposium. Overall, the symposium will assist in establishing strong collaborations among leading national, international, and Mayo Clinic experts in the field.
