Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe key prognostic elements and hospice criteria for common, chronic life-threatening conditions of the elderly
  • Formulate effective management strategies for patients with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Discuss common causes and treatment options for elderly patients with constipation
  • Appraise new drugs and new uses for existing drugs that are pertinent to geriatric practice
  • Discuss assessment, management and prevention strategies for common complications occurring in hospitalized elderly patients
  • Develop an appreciation of the skills needed to be a Transitional Care team member
  • Outline the appropriate indications, safety and role of laboratory monitoring with use of oral coagulation factor inhibitors
