Our 8th National Changing Cancer Patterns in Native Communities conference will be held September 11-14, 2010 (Student Sessionn Sept. 11-12)/General Session Sept. 12-14). This year's theme is "Strength Through Tradition and Science." Our purpose is to (1) provide a forum for community leaders and members, students, researchers, clinicians, service providers, and others to address critical cancer issues among Native people; (2) present updates on comprehensive cancer control plans in Native communities; (3) review advances in AIAN cancer research to determine future research priorities and explore the science of translational research; (4) highlight effective cancer control activities and programs in AIAN communities; (5) highlight the strengths of AIAN traditions in promoting comprehensive cancer prevention and control; and (6) publish selected papers presented at the conference so that this information can reach a wider audience. Some of the topics to be included at the conference will include cancer prevention, cancer screening, cultural sensitivity, tobacco issues, policy, structures and systems, comprehensive cancer control programs, palliative care and end-of-life issues, quality of life and survivorship issues, cancer treatment, community partnerships, traditional healing & western medicine, spirituality in cancer, physical activity, diet & nutrition, cancer education, movies and other media. The Advanced Radiology Life Support Course (ARLS) is designed to focus on the unique, life-threatening emergencies that occur within a radiology department. It is designed to teach prompt recognition and treatment of contrast reactions, management of the sedated patient, the proper management of an airway in an emergency situation and basic concepts of advanced life support. This course is fashioned after the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course that has been successful in teaching physicians, nurses and allied health personnel patient management during cardiac arrest. This course will offer the 2005 American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) recertification training materials. The ARLS, sedation and BLS training materials included in this course were used to train physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel at the Mayo Clinic prior to a Joint Commission site visit. This advanced course is designed to provide the clinician with an update on two-dimensional, Doppler, stress, and transesophageal echocardiography. It is not a “how-to” course, but instead will concentrate on the application of echocardiography in clinical decision making. The program consists primarily of clinical cases which illustrate the problems cardiologists commonly encounter. Multiple choice questions addressing the clinical utility and limitations of echocardiography follow each case. In addition, faculty present “rapid fire” and “unknown” cases.
