Genomics in Everyday Medical Practice
September 25 - 26, 2009
The practice of medicine is increasingly becoming dependent on understanding the genomic basis of diseases and treatment effects. Even now, and more so in the near future, physicians must recognize how genetic make-up predisposes patients to disease, and also how patients’ genetic make-up determines which therapies will be safe and effective. Physicians must become equipped with the tools and understanding of genomic-based medicine in order to practice effectively in the 21st century. The course offers a broad array of lecture topics beginning with a review of basic genomics and progressing to clinical applications. A variety of learning techniques will be used, including didactic coverage of core knowledge areas, and genetic counseling experiences.
