Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate increased confidence in serving as a health care volunteer in developing countries
- Diagnose and treat the most common maladies in developing countries (including fever, malaria, malnutrition, intestinal helminths, diarrheal diseases, TB, HIV, and NTDs)
- Use symptom-based diagnosis and physical exam when common diagnostic tests are non-existent
- Show self-reliance, problem-solving ability, and creativity in providing health care with minimal supplies and equipment
- Educate patients and communities on prevention of common tropical diseases
- Recognize common parasites that cause tropical disease and their lab diagnosis in the "Play with Parasites" workshop
- Perform emergency OB procedures, neonatal resuscitation, tropical ultrasound, and basic suturing in a resource-limited environment
