The Heart Beat of Cardiology: Practical Application of Echocardiography

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Quantify myocardial function using standard M-mode 2-D, and 3-D echocardiography as well as newer modalities such as strain imaging
  • Identify and quantitate valvular heart disease severity, apply current guidelines, and use the ASE standard for quantification
  • Perform clinically relevant calculations of valve areas and intracardiac pressures
  • Apply conventional and tissue Doppler techniques to diastolic function analysis
  • Interpret stress echocardiographic examinations
  • Identify and differentiate features of cardiac tamponade, constrictive pericarditis, and restrictive cardiomyopathy
  • Recognize applications of transesophageal echocardiography
  • Evaluate application of contrast echocardiography such as myocardial contrast echocardiography, pitfalls associated with contrast, and avoiding them in daily practice
