Topics in Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Evidence-Based Information for Your Practice
April 23 - 25, 2009

The explosive growth in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) since the latter part of the 20th century has brought both opportunities and risks to patients and consumers. Patients are confronted with a bewildering array of promises and claims that seems to grow larger each day. This presents a unique challenge to physicians and other healthcare professionals who are tasked with helping their patients make informed healthcare decisions. Fortunately, a growing body of research, sponsored in large part by the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is now available. Mayo Clinic, a member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, has been actively engaged in such research and has become a leader in applying such information to everyday practice. Researchers and clinicians from both Mayo Clinic Rochester and Mayo Clinic Arizona have collaborated to develop this course to provide learners with a general working knowledge of CAM and a familiarity with some of the most common CAM therapies. With that background, the conference will then focus on practical applications of CAM to patients with common diseases and conditions. Practical application of evidence-based information will enable care providers to provide optimal care and guidance to all patients, a concept increasingly described as "integrative medicine". "The practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing."
