The 15th Annual Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Conference will focus on specific issues related to the treatment of the medical patient with tobacco dependence who has been unable to stop with brief intervention and standard pharmacotherapy. Physicians, tobacco treatment specialists and other experts in tobacco treatment and behavior change will provide advanced discussions of treatment strategies to help the practitioner more effectively intervene with their patients. As with past conferences, basic information related to the various types of tobacco products being used, their addictive potential and the medications used to treat this dependence will be presented, but expanded to address advanced strategies for the difficult cases seen by most practitioners. Emphasis will be placed on the role of physicians and other health care professionals in collaborating with tobacco treatment specialists to optimize the care of these challenging patients. Time is set aside for active discussion of topics, case studies and reflection. Participants will have opportunities to meet informally with Nicotine Dependence Center staff and other faculty members to discuss specific program and patient needs.
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be able to:
- Explain differences in nicotine delivery, addiction potential, and treatment of various forms of tobacco.
- Identify strategies that optimize effectiveness of pharmacologic agents in the treatment of nicotine dependence.
- Translate the concept of nicotine use as an addiction to the provision of treatment.
- Discuss current developments in the field of nicotine dependence.
- Identify treatment issues and effective intervention strategies for patients with specific co-morbid conditions caused or aggravated by tobacco use.
- Integrate more comprehensive relapse prevention strategies into treatment planning.
- Describe a program model for the delivery of nicotine dependence services.
- Demonstrate awareness of issues in public policy and tobacco control.
Intended Audience
This program is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals experienced in working with tobacco dependent patients, and who are interested in incorporating more effective nicotine dependence treatment into their practice and/or developing more comprehensive services to meet the needs of highly tobacco dependent patients.
