This four-day symposium includes three interactive workshops and over 20 lectures in anesthesia and perioperative management. It is intended for practicing anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and perioperative health care providers. The symposium highlights current information useful for those with an interest in clinical anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Audience participation is encouraged via use of an audience response system to promote interaction with the faculty. The interactive workshops focus on difficult airways; regional anesthesia; and hands-on use of the latest technology and equipment in perioperative management.

This course focuses primarily on the three autonomic function tests having CPT codes. The program integrates a series of lectures on the underlying physiology, patient preparation, indications for autonomic testing and factors affecting the results of these autonomic tests, and HCFA requirements. The heart of the workshop will be a demonstration of specific autonomic function tests. The tests demonstrated are the quantitative sudomotor axon reflect test (QSART); tests of cardiovagal function (heart rate response to deep breathing and to the Valsalva maneuver); and tests of the adrenergic function. Hands-on demonstrations are provided using commercially available equipment. A series of sessions on the interpretation of common and uncommon examples of tests is provided. Other lectures address a number of autonomic manifestations and disorders (such as POTS, syncope, autonomic neuropathies, multiple system atrophy, painful conditions associated with autonomic dysfunction). The remaining time is devoted to handling questions and demonstrating typical examples of abnormal findings seen in tests of autonomic function.

This advanced course is provides the clinician with an update on two-dimensional, Doppler, stress, and transesophageal echocardiography. It is not a "how to" course, but instead concentrates on the application of echocardiography in clinical decision making. The program consists primarily of clinical cases that illustrate the problems cardiologists commonly encounter. Multiple choice questions addressing the clinical utility and limitations of echocardiography follow each case. In addition, faculty present "rapid fire" and "unknown" cases. Participants are encouraged to bring unknown cases to show during a special session. Special breakout sessions are devoted to the interpretation of Doppler hemodynamics, diastolic function, stress echocardiography, congenital heart disease, interventional and perioperative echocardiography. Maximum audience participation and interaction with the faculty are encouraged.
