The Center for Innovation has collaborated with several Mayo Clinic departments via eConsults, including the Referring Physician Office, Internal Medicine Outreach Office, Office of Access Management and Clinical Operations, to ensure that successful pilots can be effectively rolled out.
Synchronous eConsults provide specialty consults to patients, typically in person, using audiovisual technology for real-time collaborations. Different technologies have been piloted to help determine quality and satisfaction of the consultation, such as Cisco HealthPresence with examination peripherals, and Tandberg conferencing equipment for more discussion-based scenarios.
Asynchronous eConsults are a unique way to provide specialty consultations for patients who require more than a phone call — due to charts or necessary documentation review — but not a face-to-face appointment. This text-based service is easy to order and within the care providers' work flow. It provides quick turnaround and the necessary documentation for scheduling, billing and tracking for the providing specialist.
eConsults benefit patients by eliminating the need for a second visit, in most cases. It benefits referring care providers by allowing the care management to stay within their control. Also, eConsults take about one-third of the time of face-to-face appointments, which frees up care providers' schedules.
