"Fundamentals and Current Applications of Genomics in Medicine"
Course Description: Medical Genomics is changing how we diagnose, treat, and risk stratify our patients. Health care providers must have a working knowledge of this area to appropriately utilize the testing. In addition, media attention of medical genomics and personalized medicine makes it imperative that we are able to answer our patient questions in this area.
Intended Audience: Health care providers interested in learning about medical genomics and its impact on every day medical practice.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the meaning of the terms"human genome," "genes," and "polymorphisms."
- Explain how genetic screening and testing enhances patient care.
- Recognize patients that may benefit from genetic testing.
- Understand the importance of individualized drug treatments from the aspect of pharmacogenomics.
- Explain the ethical considerations in the area of medical genomics.
- Appropriately apply this information in the care of the patient.
