Program Description
The Mayo Clinic Barrett Honors College Premedical Scholars Program enables premedical students enrolled in Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University to explore and foster their interest in the practice of medicine through access to Mayo Clinic facilities, staff, research activities and community programs. Throughout the program, Barrett students engage in various activities over the course of two to three years. Facilitated activities help students explore their future in medicine. Students do not receive college credit for participating in this educational enrichment program.
Highlights
Barrett at Mayo student experiences include:
- Exposure to various medical and surgical specialties while spending a minimum of two hours each month shadowing a physician at Mayo Clinic.
- Emergency medical service (ambulance, fire truck) ride alongs.
- Working alongside health-related community programs such as:
- Care Seven Crisis Intervention Service (Tempe Police and Fire)
- Hospice of the Valley
- Maricopa County Medical Examiner
- Conducting research alongside Mayo Clinic students, clinicians, technicians and researchers.
- Mentoring from a Mayo physician.
- Hands-on learning through clinics on topics such as:
- Suturing
- Applying a cast
- CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
- Laparoscopic Lab
- Colonoscopy Model
- Simulation Center
- Providing medical support for community events like the Phoenix Open.
- A Mayo Clinic air ambulance mission.
- Help preparing a strong medical school application.
Eligibility Requirements
Twenty Barrett students are selected to participate in the Barrett at Mayo Program in Arizona each year. To be eligible, you must be:
- Currently enrolled as a premedical student in your sophomore or junior year at Barrett, The Honors College
- A United States citizen and/or permanent resident
How to Apply
The application deadline for the Mayo Clinic Barrett Honors College Premedical Scholars Program will be the second Monday after the start of the fall semester.
Step 1: Fill out the program application and e-mail it, along with a one-page essay about you and your family; and why you are interested in medicine as a career, to dalessandro.silvana@mayo.edu.
Step 2: If accepted to the program, students will be notified via e-mail.
